Consider the following slings to add to your collection:

Poecilotheria Metallica- Gooty Sapphire Ornamental, 4cm (Click here)

Poecilotheria-metallica2This Pokie species is a striking royal blue. The leg undersides are a bright lemon yellow. It is reported that the venom from this tarantula is stronger than most tarantulas. Even though this tarantula is fairly docile, because of its potential speed and venom, this species is not recommended as a beginner tarantula.

Chilobrachys fimbriatus- Indian Violet, 1.5 (Click here)

C_fimbriatus_AFChilobrachys fimbriatus, The Indian Violet is a striking species native to Karnataka and Maharashtra, India. Indian Violets have excellent webbing capabilities and will construct a spectacular home out of thick silk. They are considered to be the most beautiful of the Chilobrachys-genus.

Avicularia versicolor – Antilles Pinktoe, 1.5cm (Click here)

a. versiThe Antilles Pink toe Tarantula has to be one of the most beautiful tarantula species in the world. When the spiderlings hatch out, they are a brilliant blue color, and by the time they reach adult coloration they become covered in metallic reds, greens, and purples. The photo above shows the adult coloration. It is a docile yet skittish species that can be quick to run if disturbed. This still does not eliminate it from the beginners’ category. These colorful tarantulas create strong webs in tree bark in the wild, and they will do the same in captivity if provided with branches or cork bark.

Avicularia avicularia (Pinktoe) 1.5cm (Click here)

The Pinktoe Tarantula (Avicularia avicularia) is one of the most rewarding species of tarantula to keep in captivity. They are highly prized for their color and personality. This tree spider is a beautiful furry species that is dark black to metallic overall with deep violet to reddish hues to the abdomen and leg hairs. But its distinctive feature are the wonder pinkish tips on each foot, giving it the names “pinktoe” and “pink-toed” tarantula.

Iridopelma sp. Recife – Recife Beauty/ Ribbed Tree Spider 1.5cm (Click here)

As spiderlings, these tarantulas undergo a beautiful colour phase, starting off as a blue/green metallic colour with a very prominent red stripe on the abdomen, when sub adult/adult they become a peachy rust colour. I recommend this species to have in your collection, they’re like avicularia with a bit of attitude. They are a hardy type of tree spider that are easy to care for.

Haplopelma lividum- Cobalt blue, 2.5cm: (Click here)

The cobalt blue tarantula appears black to the naked eye. However, upon closer inspection or under the right light, its true bright blue color becomes stunningly apparent, shimmering with metallic iridescence.

Avicularia. Sp “Peru Purple”- Peru Purple Pink toe (Click here)

A pretty species of tarantula from Northern Peru that has an overall purple colouration. The abdomen has thick setae hair which is pink to red in colouration. They are not very common and a gem to any collection. There are not many care sheets so just treat this one like you would a normal pink toe and it will grow happily.

Grammostola pulchra – Brazilian Black Tarantula, 2cm: (Click here)

G.pulcraIt’s not difficult to see where this impressive looking species of tarantula gets its common name – as adults they are jet black with a striking velvety appearance (immature spiders such as the spiderling shown below tend to be brown, taking on their adult colour after several molts). Combined with their striking looks, their impressive size and generally docile and tractable demeanor make them incredibly desirable to enthusiasts, and suitable for beginner tarantula keepers.

Brachypelma albiceps- Mexican golden red rump, 1cm: R100 (Click here)

b. aLBICEPS Another very pretty, large and colourful Brachypelma tarantula. The Mexican Golden Red Rump is generally docile and tends to sit out in full view, they therefore make a good display animal. The colours are bright and vibrant, the carapace is a light creamy colour, the body is black and the abdomen has long red hairs.

Psalmopoeus reduncus – Orange mouth tree spider (Click here)

A very pretty Psalmopoeus species, it has a very shiny gold carapace and gold bands on the legs. But has a overall brown appearance. It reaches a adult size of around 12cm leg span.
