These are “baboon” spiders are old world tarantulas from central Africa. They love to dig great looking tunnels. H. gigas may range from a rusty overall color to black (they are a beautiful black after a molt) and they have long, thickened rear legs. These think legs are used for digging and constructing the deep burrows. This is a unique species. It is truly a communal tarantula. They share the same burrow, eat their meals together, and seem to enjoy each other company. The H. gigas has also been known to be swimming and submerge in water. It is reported that they will catch fish from the water.
